Useful skills

Here, we are going to have a look at what I call the "linguistic toolbox", ie the different skills you have or can develop to cope with the understanding of the language even if you have never come across the words before. I used most of them when I arrived in England and thoroughly encourage any student to develop them to become as good a linguist as they can be.


  1. Cognates
What are cognates? They are words which look and/or sound similar in 2 languages. 
For example:
le chocolat / la salade / la table / la culture / le cinéma / la cérémonie / fantastique / entrer...
